Life-Saving Decision for Eating Disorder Patients Refusing Treatment

New legislation could be life-saving for those struggling with an eating disorder, improving treatment outcomes and prognosis for patients who might otherwise refuse treatment.  The Ministerial Committee for Legislation recently passed a bill that would allow involuntary hospitalization of patients diagnosed with anorexia.  This law would only be pertinent in cases where a mentally ill patient institutes danger to themselves or to their surroundings.  In addition, this would include circumstances in which the patient’s prudence is compromised and diminished, and it would be immoral to agree to an individual’s refusal to consent to life-saving treatment.  This bill is monumental in the message that it is relaying regarding the seriousness of anorexia.  Furthermore, this new legislation brings much relief to families who have powerlessly struggled with their loved one’s battle with anorexia, particularly if dealing with refusal of life-saving treatments.  To read more about this significant decision for those who are struggling with an eating disorder, please continue reading here.

What are your thoughts regarding this new legislation? How will it impact those dealing with anorexia?
