Study Shows Haredi and Secular Women Face Equal Risk of Eating Disorders

A recent study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders unveiled the unbiased nature of these deadly diseases.  In an investigation to determine whether or not Haredi or Secular Women in the Jewish community faced an increase risk of developing an eating disorder, this study followed 800 Jewish women between the ages of 21-80 for research in this area.  Results yielded surprisingly even statistics between the two groups, showing that both groups of women faced equal risk of developing an eating disorder.  However, both Haredi and Secular women within the Jewish community encounter unique challenges and obstacles that can further increase their likelihood of engaging in disordered eating behaviors.  To learn more about this study, please read here.

Eating Disorders do not discriminate and can affect women and men regardless of nationality or religion.  For more information and resources about international eating disorder treatment, please visit the International Section of the Eating Disorder Hope Website.

New Legislation Passed Regarding Photoshop

In addition to new laws that have banned underweight models from participating in local advertising, policy-makers in Israel have just passed a new law that will require publications to reveal when models have been photo-shopped or if images have been edited to make models appear thinner than they are.  As one of the first laws of this kind, supporters are encouraged that this may help the effort to decrease the rate of eating disorders by promoting positive self image through media publications of realistic bodies.  This law would also be helpful in demonstrating and unveiling the vast use of digital imaging in countless publications.  The fashion industry is often criticized for romanticizing extreme thinness, and this course of action by the government is one of the first attempts to break this illusion-revealing the dangerous potentials that this could lead to, particularly the development of eating disorders.  Learn more about this new law implement in Israel by reading here.

What are your thoughts about this new legislation?  What implications might this have for those who are struggling with eating disorders?

Life-Saving Decision for Eating Disorder Patients Refusing Treatment

New legislation could be life-saving for those struggling with an eating disorder, improving treatment outcomes and prognosis for patients who might otherwise refuse treatment.  The Ministerial Committee for Legislation recently passed a bill that would allow involuntary hospitalization of patients diagnosed with anorexia.  This law would only be pertinent in cases where a mentally ill patient institutes danger to themselves or to their surroundings.  In addition, this would include circumstances in which the patient’s prudence is compromised and diminished, and it would be immoral to agree to an individual’s refusal to consent to life-saving treatment.  This bill is monumental in the message that it is relaying regarding the seriousness of anorexia.  Furthermore, this new legislation brings much relief to families who have powerlessly struggled with their loved one’s battle with anorexia, particularly if dealing with refusal of life-saving treatments.  To read more about this significant decision for those who are struggling with an eating disorder, please continue reading here.

What are your thoughts regarding this new legislation? How will it impact those dealing with anorexia?

Help for eating disorder sufferers

Source: http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk

A NEW day service for people suffering from eating disorders has been established in Sheffield.
The service, based at St George’s Community Health Centre on Winter Street, will help up to 10 patients at a time, who will attend three days a week.
The aim is for the new service to offer a more “intensive” level of care than the existing outpatient service, where people receive treatment for only a few hours a week.
